The Studio

A design studio working in stone

TERRA STUDIO designs, develops and sells furniture and objects in natural stone — tables, office furniture, storage, architectural objects and bespoke commissions.

Position

The studio is not a kitchen, bath or construction company. It is a furniture and object studio that works almost entirely in stone.

That distinction sets how the work is made: pieces are drawn, specified and documented, and material decisions are made against the drawing rather than against a price list. Wood and metal may support a piece; stone always leads.

Principles

Design

Reduce a piece to its essential volumes, then resolve proportion, edge and shadow until nothing is arbitrary.

Materiality

Stone is chosen for character. The block is read before the piece is drawn, and the drawing answers to the material.

Craftsmanship

Machine precision followed by hand finishing. The final surface is always worked by a person.

Timelessness

Work that does not date because it was never fashionable — proportion outlives style.

Process

How work is developed

  1. 01   Brief and site — what the piece has to do, and where.
  2. 02   Drawing — volumes, proportion, edge and detail.
  3. 03   Material — family, slab or block, finish and orientation.
  4. 04   Specification — dimensions, tolerances, hardware, delivery.
  5. 05   Fabrication — specialist ateliers, hand finishing, staged review.
  6. 06   Delivery — access, handling and placement.

Customization

Almost everything can be changed

Dimension, geometry, stone, finish, edge and base are variables, not fixed attributes. Many published designs exist as starting points for a commission rather than as final objects.

Where a piece cannot reasonably be adapted, the studio will say so and propose a new design instead.

Stone records every decision permanently. That is the discipline of the material.
